The Civic Ballet of Chattanooga, a
not-for-profit organization, is based at the Massari-Wood Dance Center in
East Brainerd. The purpose of this
company is to provide a semi-professional civic ballet organization which
will give talented area dancers the opportunities for performance which they
would otherwise have to leave Chattanooga to experience. It also provides a chance to educate the
general public to the broad spectrum of ballet and to give them the chance to
view productions that would not be available locally. |

The original Civic Ballet Company was founded by Helen Jones, a well known local dance teacher and local contributor to regional ballet in the Southeast. Ms. Massari was an active member of this company from 1963 through 1970. The company became inactive in 1973 due to the death of Ms. Jones.
The new Civic Ballet has produced an annual production of The
Nutcracker for 21 years. The Civic
Ballet and its precursor, the Chattanooga Dance Ensemble, under the direction
of Ms. Massari and Mr. Wood, has performed locally for over 28 years. Productions have included, besides The
Nutcracker, an annual spring show of such works as Cinderella, Serenade,
La Fille Mal Gardee, Coppelia, Firebird, Swan Lake, Gaite Parisienne, Giselle,
Les Sylphides, Pas De Quatre, La Boutique Fantasque, and numerous original
works. The company has performed for
the Very Special Arts Festival at Orange Grove Center and ha appeared with
various companies including the Scottish-American Ballet, the Tennessee
Festival Ballet, and the Allegro Dance Theatre. With funding from the Allied Arts of Chattanooga and Project
ABLE, the Civic Ballet has presented the educational program, ABC DANCE in past
years for over 10,000 area children.
